Ho Technical University

Ho Technical University (HTU), formerly known as Ho Polytechnic, is a public tertiary institution located in the Volta Region of Ghana. The university is one of the leading technical and vocational higher education institutions in the region, offering practice-oriented programmes in engineering, applied sciences, business, arts, and technology.

Background and History

The institution traces its roots to 1968, when it was established as the Ho Technical Institute to provide pre-technical training in engineering and building trades. In 1972, its programmes were upgraded to include more advanced technical, business, and vocational courses.

In 1986, the institute was redesignated as Ho Polytechnic, and in 1993, it received full legal backing under PNDC Law 321, later replaced by the Polytechnics Act, 2007 (Act 745), granting it full tertiary status. The institution later attained university status and became Ho Technical University.

The university’s motto, “Adanu Nazu Kekeli,” translates as “Adanu, become light.”

Academic Programmes

Ho Technical University offers programmes at the following levels:

  • Master of Technology (MTech)
  • Bachelor of Technology (BTech)
  • Higher National Diploma (HND)
  • Non-Tertiary and Professional Certificate Programmes

The MTech programmes are run on a sandwich basis and are affiliated with the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).

Faculties and Areas of Study

The university operates through five main faculties:

Faculty of Applied Sciences and Technology

Programmes include Food Technology, Hospitality and Tourism Management, ICT, Computer Science, Statistics and Finance, Agro-Enterprise Development, and Tourism, Leisure and Events Management.

Faculty of Engineering

Offers programmes in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Civil Engineering, Automobile Engineering, Agricultural Engineering, and Agricultural and Environmental Engineering.

Faculty of Built and Natural Environment

Provides training in Building Technology and related disciplines.

Faculty of Art and Design

Offers programmes in Fashion Design and Textiles, as well as Industrial Art with specialisations in Sculpture, Painting, Graphic Design, Ceramics, and Textiles.

Faculty of Business

Programmes include Accounting and Taxation, Marketing and Information Technology, Procurement and Supply Chain Management, and Secretaryship and Management Studies.

Higher National Diploma (HND) and Non-Tertiary Programmes

HTU also runs a wide range of HND and non-tertiary technical programmes, covering engineering, construction, business studies, fashion, catering, automotive technology, and access courses for technical and vocational graduates.
